Paul, I see it the opposite way: If totally fair regional competition is the
ultimate goal, then ride-alongs work counter to that.  If the goal is
improving drivers to the level where they can compete on the national
scene, then ride-alongs are, as you commented, the next best thing to
a formal school.  I think that seat time and learning from others have
far greater benefit in improving a driver's skills than trying to
duplicate the format of the national events in every detail.  And of
course that also applies if the goal is to teach skills in general,
without the specific goal of sending people to national events.
