I ran into this situation sometimes with the RX-7, tight turns that felt slow
in 2nd gear and made me want to use 1st gear. I found that it often _felt_
faster to downshift to 1st, but in reality it always gave me a slower time.
Lesson learned: what feels fast is not always fast.

No, I'm not. I have the exact same gearing you do. And yes, I do have to
fight to stay awake while the car gets back on the power sometimes, but I
find this usually costs me less time than downshifting to first (which is
usually done under braking) and then going back up to second.
