Chicago area, drop down to I-74 at Davenport, Iowa, and take it across
Illinois to Indianapolis. I hate driving in Chicago traffic.

I second Bob's suggestion. That's the route we take from Des Moines (on
I-80) when we head to Mid-Ohio. Avoiding Chicago is a VERY good thing.
Also has the benefit of avoiding that afore-mentioned toll road.
