I am not Nationally competitive but I have autocrossed a 99 Sport and now
have a 10th Anniversary. The 99 is the way to go, however, set ups have
yet to be proven. Lack of available shocks. Mazdaspeed makes the only
adjustables and they are only 4 ways. I also have heard that Mazdaspeed
is going or gone out of business. Koni just released adjustables but they
do not fit the Sport or 10th Anniv. The lower spring perch is different
and won't work with the Konis (so I have heard). There is an available
selection of front sway bars and cat backs.

A friend locally is pretty successful in a Popular equipment package with
14" wheels. He doesn't even have the torsen dif. Another way to go may
be the Touring package with 14" wheels and the torsen. That way you can
upgrade shocks and buy cheaper tires in the 225/50/14 size that has been
so successfull in the past.

The 10th anniv has a 390 dif vs. a 430 for the sport. Any advantage for
the 10th anniv will be course dependent because of the gearing. (quicker
shifts required into 2nd and 3rd) Weights are not really an issue. My
sport weighed in at 2297 lbs and my 10th anniv weighed in at 2327 lbs,
only a 30 lb difference.

Good luck
