I agree with this totally. Here in Idaho, I just received a 1978 truck that
has no converter and could not pass smog. After rebuilding the carburetor
and doing those maintenance items like wires and plugs, it passed and
registered as low as a new truck. It is all in the maintenance.

I believe it. A properly tuned, high performance engine is a very
efficient machine. Many engines are capable of this in the proper
        tune.

:If this were true, why is it are all the car manufacturers are
:screwing up so badly and installing these things on all the cars
:they make?

Most cars are driven by Joe Commuter, who doesn't make
sure that his car is 100% in perfect tune all the time.
The cat is an inexpensive way to make cars clean, without
requiring massive maintenance work. A car with 50,000
miles on it, can still run great, but I would imagine that
it doesn't run with the same efficiency as it did when
new. Most people get in, turn the key and drive. They fix
the car when something breaks. Most of us folk want the
car at 100% efficiency all the time. Hell, I've seen
cars with twin webers and no cats pass emmisions with
        careful tuning.
