I'd have to disagree.  I don't consider autox to be a pure form of road
racing at all.  Both sports involve cars, that's about it.

In autox you are trying to go faster than anyone else.

In road racing you are trying to finish ahead of everyone else.

These almost are the same but not really.  Road racers have to contend with
passing and being passed and knowing just when fast is fast enough.  They
have to deal with strategy and fatigue, both the driver and the car.

I'm not saying that road racers are better, no way, (to me, from the
comfort of my desk chair it actually seems easier!), they are just
different.
