Cole,
        The overheating must have been caused by something else. When you said
that the gasket was "long gone", what do you mean? What did it look
like? Did you check the head surface and the deck for straightness and
excessive corrosion? I usually have the head resurfaced when I change
head gaskets and the head gasket goes on with one side stamped "up" (or
something to that effect) and without any gasket sealer. Chase the
headbolt threads to clean them out and apply a little engine oil. I'm
not sure what the head bolt torque is at the moment
