Having dismantled (and successfully re-assembled) more calipers than one
could shake several large sticks at, I can confirm that there is absolutely
no reason why this cannot be done by any competent mechanic.
It evidently has to be done in clean conditions (as with most jobs). Also it
is important to replace the o-ring which seals the fluid channel between the
two halves. Apart from the these provisions, it would seem to be the only
effective way to properly service these parts.
