Paul,

It is possible, but I would check both the float valves in the carb (try the 
old ones and see what happens) and rebuild the fuel pump-with new valves.  An 
electric pump under the car pumping through the old mechanical pump would be a 
very good solution.

The gas tank has very little gas in it because we just repainted/sealed and 
reinstalled them.  I wonder if several gallons in the tank would prevent this 
"backflow" you are talking about.  Prior to rebuilding the carbs, we always 
had plenty of gas in the tanks.  This was also when gas was cheaper!
