The latch mechanism engages what is essentially a j-bolt on the trunk
lid. This may have rotated a bit, keeping the latch from being able to
open. Have you tried jiggling the trunk lid around horizontally? There's
a fair bit of "slop" in the hinges on mine. If the upper catch has
rotated, horizontal finesse might help.
