Brad,
I would not trust the timing marks on the sprockets. My understanding is 
the best way to "degree a cam" is with a degree wheel & a dial 
indicator. Check out this link,

importance of doing this right. I'm in the same boat & will be trying my 
hand in the next few weeks. If you finish first I'd like to hear your 
results. Besides these links the book Engine Builders by Tom Monroe 
gives a very clear explanation & understanding of how this is done.
