This sounds like the rack is definitely too loose.

It should be possible to get proper location with the rubber fitments.
They have be located very well before tightening them, and with old
rubber you might find that the mounting holes bottoms out without getting
the rack properly fixed.

Oil is definitely an issue too: oil leaks from the engine have a nasty
habit of smearing the rubber mounts, making them far too slippery.

Solid mounts are simple enough to get right, but has their disadvantages.

I have not nested the modern harder mounts, but they sound like they may
be a good compromise.
