Hadrian--The boot, or gaiter, and the rack mounting point should be clean of any grease before you install it. The wire tie should then hold it. Be sure to turn the wheel to full lock before securing

SInce we've been on the subject of oiling trunnions, I have a similar question for the steering rack. I believe the PO of my car greased the steering rack instead of oiling as the manual recommends.

I believe greasing is the common lubrication method now for both the steering rack and the trunnions (sure is on my 74 now!). As far as I know you would have to completely dissasemble the rack to cl
