Before disassembling the carb smack the float lid with a soft hammer. The temp sender can be a *itch to remove if you're unlucky. You'll have to empty most of the AF first. Mike Koken sent me a neat

On the temp gauge problem - double check that you've got a good ground. I don't know if it's the same for the R16, but in the U20 the ground between the sending unit and the engine is supposed to be

I only half-understand where it is on the U20, never having worked on one. I believe the temp sending unit is on the thermostat neck (?) bolted to the head, which has a gasket between it and the head
