it looks liek trevor is right. I examined the cable better and it's actually scorched on the jack. it looks liek the little click arm might not be up to snuff any more. off to buy a new one... thanks

don't know how they got them off. I seem to remember that the problem with the removal tool was that it was too small - it didn't fit over the locking nut enough. also, the nut was the wrong style -
