I'm not very certain on this, but if memory serves me right
the reference is to a one way clutch of sorts. Under engine
power the clutch hooks up to the driveline to move the car.
When coasting, or 'freewheeling' the clutch lets the drivetrain
spin without engine drag. Sort of like a one way ratchet.
