It is a little known fact that following the Declaration of Independence in
1776, besides commissioning John Paul Jones, a renegade Scotsman, to do as
much damage to the British as possible, the Founding fathers also changed
the English spelling of many words such as tyre and colour and notably
"Independance". They also changed the names of parts of cars. This caused
extra irritation to British proof readers.
