I also have used the Sears type stud remover and it does work. But at some
time in the past my Sears stud puller grew legs and was lost. I replaced it
with one from Napa with essentially the same design. Because the knurled
surface had the knurls parallel to the axis of the tool it wore out the
gripping surface very quickly. I searched for a better solution and found
the stud puller from Snap On worked better! It has the knurls at a diagonal
to the axis of the tool and that seems to grip the stud much better. Plus it
uses an Allen set screw to hold the knurled cam onto the socket "extension"
as opposed to the rivet that the one from Napa used. So when the knurls wear
out, you can loosen the set screw and rotate the cam 90 degrees for a fresh
unworn surface. Essentially you have four areas vs. one on the Napa/Sears
tool. The good news is the Snap On tool was a few $ cheaper then the one I
purchased from Napa! Of course you have to chase down a Snap On truck but
the better tool is worth it. Plus as a bonus, you may find some other tools
to your liking!!

Invest in a stud removal tool. It grabs the stud and turns it out from the
outer diameter vice a very small surface with an easy out. It will screw up
the stud, but its already screwed up anyway. I got mine from sears years
ago. Also try some PB blaster first. Be sure to watch the surface of the
head when you use the tool. Replacing a stud is nothing compared to
replacing a head.

I've run into a problem removing the head on my TR6 and have run out of
ideas. Using the rope trick I have the head mostly released, EXCEPT for one
point at the right-hand front-most stud. It seems that the stud has rusted
to the head along the entire length of the stud. I've been using penetrant
to try to get it to release, but have made little progress. Tried a double
nut to try and pull the whole stud, but there's not quite enough thread
exposed, and I can't get the top nut on enough to lock. Gave in and tried
an easy out, it broke off only a few threads in, and the stud didn't budge.
Have considered trying to drill out the stud, but am leaving it as a last
resord, because I'm afraid of damaging the head.
Any ideas? I've been stalled on this project for a long time, and would
really like to get the car screwed back together and back on the road, but
I'm stuck (so is the head), and I don't know where to go from here.
