Chris, I can't quote the lengths to you from memory, but I'm pretty sure I
know what's going on. You have a control head from an "adjustable" steering
wheel (which was an option on the TR2-3B), but have the stator tube for a
non-adjustable wheel. The stator tube for the adjustable wheel has a much
longer (and hence weaker) slot in it, which allows the control head tube to
slide over it and the dimples to slide in the slot as the wheel is adjusted
in or out.
The tube on the non-adjustable control head is only about 3 or 4 inches
long, and the dimples are well up on the tube. I believe the tubes can be
exchanged between control heads, if only you can find a non-adjustable head.
