>I have a new coil that says no external resistor is to be used so I

the ballast resistor. I get a spark off the lead out of the coil (to the
distributor) when I open the points by hand or rotate the engine by hand.
When I crank the engine, no spark occurs until I let go of the key, and
then
I get a substantial spark. Any ideas or suggestions?

It could be either a bad or miss-wired keyswitch. The White wire should
remain hot in the cranking position but it appearently is not. I had this
problem on an MG many years ago and a new keyswitch solved the problem.
More recently I encountered this on a friend's TR6 (under restoration) and
the white wire was plugged onto the wrong terminal on the keyswitch.
Again, putting it on the right terminal corrected the problem.
As a quick test you could run a jumper from the battery to the coil and try
again. Note that you will have to pull the jumper off to stop the engine.
Good luck
Dave
