If you simply removed the resistor and did not connect the two leads that
went to the resistor together (in effect shorted across the resistor) then
you arent getting voltage to the coil when you "let go" of the key.  It is
wired (stock) so that when you start the car the coil gets full voltage,
then when you are in the run position the voltage is diverted through the
resistor to the coil.  If you simply disconnect the resistor, then this
"diverted" voltage is now disconnected and nothing goes to the coil -
