From what I've heard, it is not uncommon for the big brass plug
itself to become distorted, as it's fairly soft metal.
Overtightening or dropping the gearbox on the plug can bend it, in
which case no amount of gasket material will fix it. Maybe check the
sealing edge of the plug with a straightedge?
