Even more interesting. Then that would make two TR3As currently residing
in Ottawa, Ontario that originally came from "one of Malta, South Africa
or Australia". Now, given that these two cars are LHD and appear to have
always been so (I've had 2TS 81140 L since '77), South Africa and
Australia are unlikey countries of origin. Is/was Malta RHD or LHD??
Still, this would be a long-shot.
Anybody else want to give this a shot??
Sure, why not? :-)
Normally, I wouldn't question John, but I was under the impression that the
initial number indicating assembly elsewhere than Coventry (or Solihull or
Speke or...) came some time in the 1960s and was not normally used during the
production years of the TR3A. (Heck, why not open up another tangent of
discussion on this topic, eh?) Anyway, here's a list of those codes and the
plants they represent, shared with me a number of years ago by Leon Guyot and
others:
code 1 = BELGIUM
code 2 = AUSTRALIA
code 3 = NEW ZEALAND
code 4 = SOUTH AFRICA
code 5 = MALTA
code 6 = INDIA
code 7 = EIRE
code 8 = PHILLIPINES
code 9 = PERU
code 10 = PORTUGAL
code 11 = ISRAEL
Sure seems odd that so many Australian-assembled TR3s would have ended up in
Canada or other parts of North America, especially in LHD configuration. Now
if I could only remember what I've heard in years past about this "2" on some
Canadian TR's....
