Maybe the following is a good puzzler for Car Talk on NPR...

As you know, there is a sequence for tightening head bolts, and a reverse
sequence for loosening them. so, the first one you loosen is the last one
you tighten when removing/refitting the head -- when you are loosening all
the bolts, and then tightening them all.

i don't want to take the TR7 head off, i just want to retorque it now that I
have run it for a bit after the rebuild.

and i assume i don't want to loosen all the bolts at once -- might raise the
head gasket?

so, which sequence do i use to loosen and then tighten one bolt at a time,
the tightening sequence or the loosening sequence?

i used the tightening sequence last time -- that is, i loosened and
re-tightened the first bolt in the tightening sequence, then the next in the
tightening sequence...

does this question even make sense?.....

a befuddled thanks for all replies.
