Another alternative, slightly shady but of the "no harm, no foul" variety:
Tell the DMV that you bought the car in a non-titling state - Maine or New
Hampshire for example. New Hampshire only titles 10 years rolling, Maine
15. Niether will give you a title for love or money for a car older than
that. They destroy the records as the cars reach the appropriate age. Your
state surely has some mechanism for dealing with this situation.
Just out of curiosity, what state(s) wants a title for a 40 year old car?
