That is what I found. When I rebuilt my front suspension, I left the d-side
on, so that I would have a reference point when rebuilding the p-side. I
found that L was for left, R was for right. I seem to remember that the
"less bent" wishbone (pardon the complex terminology!) was to the front, and
the "more bent" one to the rear. Anyway, everything lined up, and I was
happy.

R stands for rear    This should be the smaller of the two wishbones.  
It may be the reason that the vertical link doesn't line up.

Hate to contradict you but - on the front upper wish bones, the rear parts 
are interchangeable side to side.  The front piece however is not.  When you

turn them over (as in moving from one side to the other) there is a "bend"
to 
them.

As such, when you are looking down on it with the "R" facing up - this is
the 
orientation for the right side.  If you are looking down on it with an "L" 
facing up - this is the orientation for the left side.

This sets the vertical link up with a negative castor.  Castor is then 
further adjusted by the use of shims.
