The problem is that metals corrode (by nature). And when you apply an
electric current to the metal in the presence of moisture (from the air
in this case) they oxidize. Most oxidation occurs in the form of an
unwanted by-product. i.e Rust, tarnish, etc.
The key is to prevent the oxygen from getting to the metal contacts.
Thus, the grease products which have been mentioned by several others
are by far the cheapest way to keep the corrosion at a minimum.
However, nothing lasts forever, no matter how much care we take.
