You seem to be talking about participants'/people's choice (as opposed to 
concours).  I have no idea what other people do, but my philosophy in this 
area is to vote for whatever turns my crank rather than trying to be a 
pseudo concours judge.  Heck, if the cars in participants'/people's choice 
wanted to be judged on originality, they should have entered concours.  My 
two cents.
