I think I can give you a little clue. Last year, at the Townsend show here in
east Tennessee, a TR4 won second place in the TR2-3 category! The bottom line
is, there is no ryme nor reason to the voting in a participant's choice. Many
times, people vote for a particular car because they met the owner, and had a
pleasant conversation with him or her. Sometimes, just the opposite. Often,
owners of one marque have no knowledge whatever of the other marques, and
don't know what they should look like, as witness the TR4 win in the TR2-3
class. Most people will do a fairly good job of evaluating cars in their
class, but when it comes to the other cars, they do just a cursory review.
I have always been amazed at the voting results in the TR6 class at Townsend.
One year, there were about 12 TR6s in the show, and at least 4-5 of them were
clearly better than mine, yet I won 2nd place. The next year, there were only
about 4-5, and none of them were any where near as nice as mine, not even
close, yet I didn't win anything. Luckily, I'm not into competition (when I
do win, I toss the trophy into the trash can), so it's no problem. If you are
competitive, the only way to go is in the judged classes, and even there,
there often is no justice.
