Now that I have put about a thousand miles on our Mk I Spitfire since a
total off frame restoration, I am curious about the ride quality and
whether others have a similar experience. Note, virtually every suspension
part is new, reconditioned or replaced EXCEPT the front and rear springs -
cleaned, blasted, and painted only. Simply put, it seems to be a little
"soft" in the rear (and no jokes about advanced aging and soft behinds -
I'm only in my late thirties, okay?).
Occasionally when "briskly" driving down the road I may encounter a crest,
such as in the middle of an intersection, or a sizeable dip for drainage
and the backend will bottom out with the rear tires rubbing the body and
the exhaust pipe "slightly" scraping the pavement unless I back off quite a
bit. Visually, the car has neutral to very slight negative rear camber
when empty and parked, and slighty more negative rear camber when I and the
missus are in it - but certainly not an excessive amount of negative
camber. Tires are one size larger (175x70 -13 inchers on 5.5 inch wide
wires). Do others have this problem? Is my rear spring weak? Should I
have replaced it when the whole car was apart (if so - aaarrrrggghhh!).
Thanks for the input. Regards,
