This Mechanic's Feel thing has come up a couple of times. "Zen and
the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" really touched me when I read it
(almost 20 years ago). I wonder how it would read in 1995. Of
course I like to think I have the touch, but how does one know?
How does one help someone else acquire it? Can it be learned?

The other day I was replacing the diff cover on my car. One of the
bolts would turn in about halfway and then get quite stiff. I _know_
that 25 years ago I would've just gotten a bigger wrench and ended up
snapping the bolt or stripping the thread in the case. This time I
backed the bolt out, cleaned its threads, cleaned the threads in the
case, and tried again. Stuck again. Finally, I ran the bolt in from
the back side, slowly and carefully. For some reason that cleared up
the problem. I took a while, but not nearly as long as extracting a
broken bolt would have!

Hey, this sounds almost as versatile as a screwdriver! Thanks for the tip.
