I have a '77, and was able to install the speakers in the rear panel,
the one that sits in front of the gas tank. Some careful
measurements were required, as the speaker protrudes into the gap
between the gas tank and the body - too high, it would hit the gas
tank, too low, the body. I don't remember the size of my speakers,
though - they may be slightly smaller than what you've got.
You could, of course, shim them out from the panel a bit with a
little plywood frame...
