Brad,
Since you are interested in safety anyway, fit a roll
bar, then use it for the rear upper belt mount.
As for the axle, if it's bent where the flange
attaches, then it's a write-off, but if it's bent in
the shaft area, consider having it straightened. Any
competent shop with a press should be able to do the
job, without disassembling the axle from the flange,
hub, etc. (you will of course have to remove the
assembly from the car).
Of course, one must ask how the shaft came to be bent
in the first place, usually this would be from losing
a U-joint at speed and flailing about. Check for
cracks and any other damage, they will also disqualify
the axle from salvage.
