I'm not sure it's a particularly British thing, as I've never met it on any
car other than those in the Herald/Spitfire/GT6 family.  It's certainly not
present on MGBs or Midgets - but they are monocoque, rather than having a
separate chassis, so having a big hole where the transmission cover goes
would damage stiffness and structural integrity.  As for other chassis-based
cars - well, I haven't seen enough to be able to make much comment...
