Sounds like the timing is off about 15 degrees, try retarding it, you
wouldn't need a light just turn it clockwise until it runs better. After all
things have been set shoot it with a light and set it.

OK, the good news, the engine starts !! The bad, runs a bit rich (we're
supposed to use classic British understatement, right ?). Cannot get the
idle low enough to set the timing, backfires through the carb, black soot
coming out of the exhaust. Can't tell you how bad this nasty California gas
smells !
It's a '72 with '69 dual SU - HS2's. Also has a '69 emission control valve
(pcv) with a 1/16" hole through the oil cap.
