How about an HVLP compressor? They typically have enough hose so you
can leave them outside to draw fresh air, and they surely don't put oil
into the air, as that would ruin the paint job. Ditto for dust, so I
hope the filters are pretty good. Seems like the low pressure would be
perfect for breathing, too. By being a few psi above atmospheric, a
leaky mask wouldn't be dangerous. (I'm not a diver, so I don't know
what pressure you want the air at to breathe, but I bet it's close to
HVLP pressure.)

I'm imagining an HVLP setup where the hose has a T near your shoulder --
one hose to your mask, another to the gun in your hand. If you only
need the breathing system when you're painting, you'd have the HVLP pump
set up and plugged in anyway.

Were I to do any painting with nasty paints, I'd really try to buy a
fresh air system. Of course, I'd have to do something about my beard -
can't shave it as my wife and kids wouldn't know who I was.

That said let's keep brainstorming about this - if we can come up with a
safe, workable solution I'd jump at it!
