I plan on replacing the tank on my 68 BGT shortly. The top of the old
(original) tank has rusted, so there is no saving it.

With the tank out, I will wire brush the entire area under the wheel well,
and use on of the "no-rust" products -- I'm using POR-15. Others may swear
by different products (Eastwood carries many). I will then use it on the top
of the tank as well, then mask it off and use one of their other products
(chassis black) on the "visible" part ofthe tank. POR-15 breaks down in
sunlight, so I'm just playing it safe there (not that much sunlight hits the
visible part of the tank, but better safe than sorry.

Eastwood carries a zinc based paint that they sell as specially made for
coating the outside of gas tanks. They claim the zinc will impede any
rusting. Reading the literature, the application calls for applying it to
bare metal for best results, and since my tank came with a finish on it
already, I didn't want to strip it down.

 Well, that's my plan anyway.....
