I have a delco pump in my Midget, and I can only hear it at idle
with the top up. I don't mind it actually, gives me
a nice soft tick... tick... to enjoy when staring
at a red light, like a clock.
Anything above idle, it's too quiet to be heard over
the engine, so I never hear the "woodpecker" just the
grandfather clock.
I have an SU pump in my MGB, and never hear it. However,
I have no top in that car, so maybe I would if I had
a lid.
Perhaps you should look into padding the mountings
of your fuel pump? The pump itself is not very
loud, but the pump might be vibrating some panel
on your car like the strings vibrate the top of
an acoustic guitar, creating a lot of volume.
You might get a lot of improvement putting some
soft rubber pads on the bolts that hold it on. Should
be free to try because you can make the grommets
out of anything you have around.
