I'd expect the clutch to slip in 4th before lower gears, that is when the
greatest torque is applied to it (same power from engine, greater resistance
from wheels). Have you checked that there is free play on the slave piston
with the clutch released? You should be able to push the piston a bit
further into the cylinder than the clutch itself does (although non-OE
clutch release mechanisms may vary). Note that this will mean a longer
throw on the clutch pedal the first couple of times it is used subsequently,
you might want to pump it before engaging a gear with the engine running.
