An unmolested pan should have quite a lot of raised and sunk areas around
the bolt holes and along the flanges to help with sealing. I think the
torque figure is only 6 or 8lb which seems ridiculously low when fitting it
with a torque wrench, and I'm sure many get over tightened which bows the
flanges between the bolts. I've replaced mine (factory V8) twice on-car for
various reasons (not leaks) and had no problem getting a seal. The first
time I used old-fashioned non-hardening Hermetite Red, the second time a
more modern silicone-type sealant. The silicone seemed to soften the cork
gasket and exude it from the joint as I tightened it, making me nervous that
it had ruptured it and it would leak badly. It didn't, but I would never
use silicone again, preferring Hermetite.
