On occasion I have seen dampers =C2=A0with plastic caps that have the steel=
 rod protruding through the top of the cap. =C2=A0This is caused when the e=
ngine has backfired through the carburetors and the piston and damper are d=
riven upwards. This drives the damper rod through the plastic cap. =C2=A0Yo=
u will never see this with the dampers with brass caps.=C2=A0=C2=A0I suspec=
t this is what started the issue with your damper before the previous owner=
 made it even worse.=C2=A0=C2=A0
