The ammeter is connected in series.  It is the first leg of the positive
circuit.  Terrible design, as Lee said it means your ammeter is acting as the
fuse for the entire car.  Cut the positive wire before the ammeter and wire in
an inline fuse of no more than 40 amps, and/or change the ammeter to a
voltmeter and wire in parralel.  If you do this with a voltmeter it will work
as it should, if you do it with the ammeter it becomes decorative.
