I see what you are talking about, but some more information is needed.
The bottom end of the distributor shaft has an offset protrusion. Is 
it in the same position as on Leighs?

I suspect that it is not different, but off the same amount. That make 
the problem more easily solved, the distributor drive shaft under the 
distributor is off.  All you need to do is pull the shaft up (it will 
turn as it comes up) and reposition it until the distributor comes 
back into time.

Repositioning the shaft has been discussed here before, and I believe 
also on 311s.org.
