I had the same problem with my 66 before I replaced the engine. For no well
understood reason my car started to run very hot. I replaced the thermostat
but that wasn't the problem. My cooling system was in top condition and
everything was as it should be. I never was able to solve the problem and
had planned a stroker project for it and a 5 speed so I just ripped the
engine out.
I did find water passages that were not cast properly and were somewhat
blocked by poor casting but why would it suddenly start to overheat? I still
have no clue. I also checked the gauge w/ a digital thermometer and the
gauge was accurate.
