Ian,
Concerning the whine, I have a whine on my car that seems to come from
behind me that stops when I push in the clutch. The differential can
produce this kind of noise when the gears are under load and be quiet when
they are coasting.
This kind of noise can be difficult to diagnose because the driveshaft can
telegraph the noise to other parts of the drivetrain. You can pull the
bottom plate on the trans and check the lay shaft bearings for any play at
all. The shaft should have only a few thousandths of end play and no side
play. If there is play, that is probably the problem. I don't think this
is the problem though, because gear whine usually happens when the gears
are under load. The lay shaft/cluster gears are under load in 3rd gear, but
not in 4th gear. I still suspect the differential.
Peace,
Pat
