The voltage going through the points has less to do than the current. The
first thing that takes points usually is a bad condenser. The coil may be
incorrect for the car. Make sure you are using a coil that requires a
external resister AND the resistor is matched to it. That factory coil
system is nice and in fact back in the good old days the 2000 coil was the
hot setup for the 510s as it had a higher secondary voltage. With an
external resistor wired the way Datsun did it you get full battery voltage
to the coil while starting the engine. This gives a hotter spark, but the
coil would fry if ran at that voltage all the time. Once the key is released
from the start position, the power to the coil goes through the resistor. If
I remember right the voltage drops to around 8 volts to the coil and it runs
cooler during normal operation. Also make sure the points are clean when you
put in a new pair. The rub strip needs lube on the distributor cam, but the
points should be cleaned with some alcohol when you are done setting the
gap/dwell.
The erratic ammeter may very well be a regulator. But also check that all
the ground connections are good. Tighten the mount of the regulator. Check
the connections on the alt. And make sure the alt drive belt it tight
enough.
