I agree with the voltage regulator theory.
A couple of months back, my 66 went completley wierd!!!!!
I on a hunch took the regulator out of my 70, tried it, cured all!!!
Went to pep boys, they had one with pretty cad plating and everything.
I'm sure the vendors have them also.
I tried pep boys first on the hopes I could get one that day.

My car had the same symptoms as yours, with exception of the points
burning up. didn't run it that long.
