I wasn't going to jump into the this, but...
IHO,
The Nissan motors, FJ20, SR20, KA24 ... are your best bet.
I have owned a few "OVER POWERED" toys... 468" BB 55 Chev., 350 Vega,
455" Willies Wagon.
They are/were fast if you could keep them straight.
They all needed BIGGER BRAKES and were tricky to control in a turn.
IHO,
a balanced car is ALWAYS more fun to drive.
Now I have a Solex 2000...
have to slip the clutch keep the engine alive below 2000 rpm...
wish I had 4.62 or 5.12 gears...
But its fun to drive.
