the rules state very clearly that airbag steering wheels cannot be changed
and there is no up/back-dating allowed in Stock; at a minimum you will need
to propose to the SEB that new language be inserted into the rulebook.
I can see the SCCA Risk Management lawyers raising concerns due to today's
current liability environment; i.e. does the factory authorize installing the
later model year steering wheel and airbag on earlier year vehicles? You'd
think the SCCA would be clear of any liability for you making this choice
yourself, but many rulings coming out of courtrooms now hold organizations as
responsible accomplices. .
Think about it, you hear about cases like this in the news all the time. For
crying out loud, some kids parents just filed a lawsuit against McDonald's
claiming their kids are obese because they take them to eat there several
times a week and McD's didn't warn them well enough that this could happen.
Un-freaking-believable ....
Intent may not be so obvious as proposed earlier. Since all of today's
vehicle now come with airbags perhaps the current wording is a way to
eliminate steering wheel changes. The idea being that most older vehicles
will ultimately not be competitive even with a steering wheel change or will
just disappear altogether. Kind of like the flexible brake line rule, which
you can do on a '91 Mr2, but not the later years of the exact same model.
good luck in your quest,
Mark
