Okay, I'll take a hack at this... (since I'm not good enough to have BFG or
Kumho give me a break on these... :-)
My benchmark was a CS 84 rx7 gslse. Very limited camber, solid rear axle,
fairly light (~2450lbs). I went from R1s to V700s, after having run
V700s & R1s on my dodge, before then.
The V700s tolerate additional slip angles. They don't fall off nearly as
quickly as the R1s when max grip is exceeded. This works well for
heavy cars and cars with heavy suspensions (as in solid-axle). If
you hit a bump in a turn, the R1s will be off and sliding, whereas
the V7s will not drop off as much, making the recovery easier.
The V700s do not respond as quickly as R1s. In turn, you learn to lead the
car a bit. Not a big problem, at least in my case.
The wear from the V700s seemed to be about 50% more than the R1s. However,
the R1s were not as tolerant of wheel lockup, so they rarely got near the
end of the tread life (with me). V700s didn't seem to care nearly as
much about lockup.
Also, my experience showed the R1s would lose grip due to heat cycling
FAR faster than the Ks. It seems that others haven't seen that, so
I'm not sure what is going on, there.
The biggest downside I've seen to Kumho is not being able to get the tires.
I've been dying to try them on my 924S, but until this year, they didn't
have any in this country. Now they are only available at tire rack
(which works out to be >$100 additional (over CUT), per set).
